Acoustic Ladyland Quotes
We're all trained jazz musicians and I love classic guitar music but I don't play guitar. I realised that a huge part of what I loved about music was the guitar but my music [jazz] was nothing to do with that. So I found a way to merge the two together. About 4/5 yrs ago I decided to rearrange some Jimi Hendrix tunes and we ended up turning it into our own thing and it kind of caught on. I was playing Jimi's vocal lines instrumentally it got me away from doing that jazz thing of making the melodies really complicated. People latched onto it so I thought that must be the secret, make jazz that people like. All of a sudden we had this sound that was our own sound just from taking stuff away from the writing.

I've been trying to marry up the two kinds of music I've always loved: punk rock with jazz. I've been trying to find an organic way the two can meet so I can feel fulfilled as a person so I'm not split in two. Jazz as a whole is very separate from the music industry and isn't as pushed as all other genres. But I wasn't out on a mission to bring jazz to the masses. I just wanted to write music that represented me as a person.

I've had to resist giving the music a name. I've had the argument if you give music a name it will grow really quickly but will die out really quickly. So, the press decide on a certain set of aesthetics that is then collectively given a name linking it to a certain genre of music. We're on a different path to that. It's still the band and the sound and the energy but aesthetically it might change and I want to have the freedom to do that.
